Overview

The ICANN Toronto meeting comes at a crucial time for the future of Internet Governance as it occurs in the lead up to several other Internet related events including the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), as well as UN discussions on Internet Governance issues under its Second Committee. This session will offer ICANN participants the opportunity to learn more about current developments and dynamics in this space, and to exchange views on key issues of discussion.

Agenda Details:
  • Preparations for the 7th IGF meeting scheduled to take place this year in Baku, Azerbaijan on 6-9 November. Updates on meeting program, ICANN objectives for meeting and other logistical information will be shared.
  • "Enhanced Cooperation" and the on going debate regarding what has been achieved so far, what is missing, and suggestions for next steps going forward. This debate is likely to come up at the UN General Assembly this year, also in light of the WSIS+10 Review process which will also be touched on.
  • WTSA and WCIT meetings are taking place this year in Dubai, UAE on 20-29 November and 3-14 December respectively. Both conferences are addressing issues relevant to the Internet and its global governance, and their outcomes, especially the likely agreement on new International Telecommunication Regulations, may have an impact on various parts of the Internet space. Also, the upcoming discussions on Internet Governance at the WTPF (World Telecommunication Policy Forum) that will take place in Geneva on 14-16 May 2013 will be touched upon.
